Our place sits between the green and yellow. We can see a lot of stars at night, and can occasionally get a faint hint of the Milky Way. I look forward to getting back to southern Utah next summer!

I used too in northern Maine family still has a Camp up there you can see the space station pass overhead.

Very cool - we were at the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff last summer and it passed over while we were there.

I live in the dark, one of the dark red areas...:(

I bet you’ve got great restaurants.

We’re in a red spot but it’s a 10 minute drive into the dark.. In-
fact the Astronomical Society has a dome at our ski trails;

I’m approximately here:
Not very good for star gazing though you can at least see some stars. When I lived in Man hattan, I could see Jupiter and that was about it. I regret not venturing west from Austin when I lived there to see some actual dark sky on a moonless night.

Sounds like you have a trip to plan.

Quite a long way from where I am to get to reasonable darkness. Though I did actually get a pretty nice sky in Park City a few years ago, despite that being pretty sub-optimal on the map, so maybe I don’t have to go quite as far :
Mainly I try to peak out the window on overnight flights, the most magnificent sky I’ve seen was over the Atlantic on a moonless night, just an impossible number of stars.

YES.

That we do, haha. I’m at the higher end of the millennial generation, but DO NOT take me too far away from avocados , IPA, brunch options , strong coffee, or the ability to order “ a burger with bacon, organic blue cheese, bubble lettuce, a fried egg, no bun, side salad with polenta croutons” without the server looking at me like I’m from another planet.

Oh man, the view from that flight sounds amazing.

Got that Detroit white light, but grew up in the blue. Didn’ t appreciate it when I was younger but like looking up when I go back home now .
![]() 08/07/2019 at 13:53 |

I think we can get all that in Tulsa, minus the polenta croutons - ha!

I'm fairly dark
![]() 08/07/2019 at 13:55 |

Ah... wish we were in the blue. Not much of it in the eastern half of the country!

Nice - you’ve got it a little better than me.

My house is in a Yellowish/orange spot in Southern NM, but a relatively short drive 20 minute drive gets me into gray spots. I can see the glow of El Paso and Juarez in the distance from my backyard. I go camping with some regularity in the giant black spot in Western NM a few hours away. Combine that complete lack of light pollution (the VLA and MRO are in the area because they’re one of the darkest places in the continental US) and a camp site at 8,000 or 9,000+ feet in elevation and the night sky is phenomenal
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:01 |

I live in the whitest of all lights.
When in Ireland, it’s the sky that is brightest...
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:02 |

I live on the edge between a red and a white zone. I’ve seen the milky way from a blue zone but I still would have liked it darker.
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:05 |

I’m in about the middle of this
I’m probably an hours drive from green and 2 hours to somewhere blue.
For living in a fairly rural area it’s amazing how much light pollution there is from the nearby cities and urban sprawl.
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:07 |

I have stopped a few times in bumfuck NM when I’m driving home just to look at the sky.

Pretty dark where I am.
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:17 |

Yeah, I agree. We can see a lot at our place, but I wish we could see more.

I’m in a lighter spot, although it doesn’t seem anywhere near as light as this map makes out 0_o
https://darksitefinder.com/maps/world.html#5/46.634/-65.698
BUT, I am only an hour away from Keji National Park, which is a VERY dark dark zone! :)

There’s a place called Black Mesa in the panhandle of OK - going to have to make a trip out there someday.

Palm B each, so not in the dark. I do miss growing up in the Bahamas where there was much less light pollution and I could see quite a bit with my little telescope.
![]() 08/07/2019 at 14:22 |

I live in the darker yellow band, the blue bands are probably within a 1/2 hour, and places with no color are easily within an hour.

We’ll be staying outside of Zion for a week. We took a long road trip last summer, and I got a good view of the Milky Way at a KOA outside of Bryce.

Keji is a gorgeous place! If you’re ever up in Nova Scotia, I recommend a visit there, and a
drive along the Cabot Trail in on Cape Breton at Nova Scotia’s northern tip! :)

The magnification wasn’t that much, but it was the coolest thing to see Saturn’ s rings and Jupiter with a few of its moons even though they were only maybe 1/8" in size. The moon and all its craters is also a nice sight.

I live on downtown Atlanta. Even the lakes around me are green on that map. There is no hope. I actually do miss living outside of a city though.
![]() 08/07/2019 at 15:13 |

Green is fairly dark, just not really dark.
I live about 10 miles away from civilization in any direction, but my commute to work downtown is only 35 mins. Not too shabby, if you can live with not getting pizza delivered to your house.

It’s that bigger hazy whitish thing we see most nights, right?

Best place here in the U.K. is the north of Scotland.
But it’s not too bad around me. My county only has six large areas of population.

I’m right on the border of red and light grey. No night sky for me.

A few times over the years. But they always look the best at like 3am, and I don’t stay up that late anymore :P.

I hear you...
